Reading 35: Concerning the Weekly Priest (Hebdomadarius)

In the absence of the abbot, the prior, and the sub-prior, the weekly priest shall fulfill in all matters the office of the prior. But let the convent remain seldom without someone superior - namely the abbot, prior, or sub-prior - and if the weekly priest is absent himself, the one to whom the weekly priest gives his authority shall execute his duties. But whenever the weekly priest is not able to sing mass, let him promptly make a sign to someone else to sing, and if that person can sing it, let him make a sign without [making any] excuse; if, however, he cannot, he shall humbly excuse himself, and the priest shall make a sign to another. The deacon and the sub-deacon, and all septimanarii [weekly attendants] are to do the same. And it must be known that the deacon and sub-deacon are to take communion at the high Mass (or major mass), if they wish, and are to be confessed in the beginning of their weekly service, and let them take care not to avoid it, so long as they themselves and all others are confessed by confessors appointed by the abbot, if such can be found. Whoever of the priests at the recurrence of his turn cannot perform his weekly service, let him discretely tell the prior before being put on the tabula [notice board] for what reason he cannot do it, and if the prior acknowledges it, the person who ought to perform service after him, shall undertake the service humbly and with good will.

What I say concerning the weekly priest, I am saying of all others in the case that one falls sick within his [assigned] week. If his sickness is light, so that he is only apart from the convent, he should commit his turn to another in person. If, however, his condition begins to worsen, he lays down in the infirmary, he himself or through someone else ought to inform the prior, so that he may make provisions for the service. He must do the same if he is sent on the road by the abbot. If, however, a brother leaves on account of his business or bloodletting, he himself shall entrust [the weekly service] to another, and if by chance he has forgotten to entrust it to somebody else, the prior shall make provisions for the service; the brother, however, upon his return, shall admit his fault and shall be punished for his negligence. If he who leaves or has undergone bloodletting or is sick does little of his weekly service, he who is next to be put on the tabula [notice board] shall perform the service. Whenever the abbot ought to celebrate [Mass] on duplex feasts, the daily priest asks him whether he wishes to celebrate it; if he does not wish, (the weekly priest asks) the prior; if he also cannot do it, [the weekly priest asks] the sub-prior. If he likewise cannot (do it), the priest shall celebrate [Mass].

Sacerdos hebdomadarius, absente abbate, priore et subpriore, per omnia officium prioris suppleat. Raro tamen remaneat conuentus sine aliquo superiore, abbate uidelicet, priore uel subpriore, et si ipse hebdomadarius defuerit, ille cui committit uices suas id faciat. Quotiens autem sacerdos missam cantare non potest, innuat tempestiue alii ut cum cantet, et ille, si cantare potest, innuat sine excusatione ; sin autem humiliter se excuset, et sacerdos alii innuat. Hoc idem diaconus et subdiaconus, et omnes septimanarii facere debent. Et sciendum quod diaconus et subdiaconus maioris missae communicent, si uoluerint, et in initio suae septimanae confiteantur, et caueant ne subterfugiant, tantum modo ipsi et omnes alii confessoribus ab abbate constitutis, si possint inueniri, confiteantur. Quicunque sacerdotum recurrente ordine uicis suae septimanam suam non potest facere antequam ponatur in tabula, dicat priori ordinis in secreto quare non possit, et si prior ei concesserit, ille qui post eum debet facere, humiliter et benigne eam suscipiat.

Quod dico de ebdomadario sacerdote, de omnibus aliis dico, si infra septimanam suam coeperit infirmari. Si leuis infirmitas est, ut tantum sit foras conuentum, ipsemet uices suas alii committat. Si autem ingrauescere incipiat, in infirmaria iaceat, per se uel per alium priori debet nuntiare, ut eam prouideri faciat. Similiter debet facere, si in uia dirigitur, ab abbate. Si autem propter negotium suum exit uel ipse minuitur, ipsemet alii committat, et si forte per obliuionem nulli commiserit, prior eam prouideri faciat ; ipse autem, cum redierit, culpam suam recognoscat et pro negligentia puniatur. Si parum fecit de septimana sua ille qui exit uel minuitur uel infirmatur, ille eam faciat qui post illum in tabula debet poni. Quoties in duplicibus anniuersariis abbas debet celebrare, ebdomadarius requirit ab eo utrum celebrare uoluerit ; si ipse noluerit, a priore ; si ipse etiam non potest, a suppriore. Similiter si ipse non potest, ipse sacerdos celebret.
