Reading Four (Prime)
If it is a day of two meals, the signal for the singing of Prime shall be struck earlier, if however it is a day of fast - later, but it must be regulated in such a way that those who celebrate Mass would be able to attend Prime with their attendants, if they had started celebrating before that hour. And in order for it not to be a burden to anybody, they shall celebrate promptly as to be able to be present at the beginning of the hour. When the reminder for Prime has been struck, the junior brothers and whoever of the rest wants to, can go in the dormitory to change clothes and shoes and relieve the necessities of the body, and returning they shall go into the choir, so they can attend the beginning of Prime.
The officers shall finish their tasks in their workplaces and shall arrive at the beginning of the hour, if they are able [to do so] appropriately. Prime, however, shall be struck until all brothers, both officers and the rest, can congregate, and the weekly priest shall wait so that all might be able to attend. And after the Lord's Prayer is said and the prior has struck the stall, the weekly priest shall begin Prime. At Quicunque vult(The Athanasian Creed) all should stand. At Beati immaculatithe priest of the morning may prepare himself for the singing of the Mass, when the Subvenite is not said. If the Subvenite is sung, let him go at the defecit or the legem pone, if he so wishes. In that mass, the deacon, dressed with a clean surplice ought to minister in his order unless the celebration is for the deceased. Likewise the sub-deacon ought to check the things that must be prepared.
When he must say the Converte nos, the priest, dressed in the sacred vestments, shall go into the choir and in the presence of everyone shall say the Confiteo (Apostles' Creed), sung at Prime and Compline unless the abbot is present, beginning deeply and with devotion in this way: Confitemini Domino. And after the Confiteor has been said, he shall ascend the steps of the sanctuary. After this, when they (the priest and his attendants) come before the relics and when they cross before the body of the Lord, [they shall bow] humbly but when they come to the altar, they shall perform the ante et retro salutation. If however seven psalms (the Penitential Psalms) or commendatiohave followed Prime, then the prior of the assembly shall say the Confiteor [Apostles' Creed]. Thus mass is to be sung. When it is finished, the weekly priest shall begin the Prime of the blessed Mary. The morning priest shall return to take off his vestments in the same way he came.
