Reading 43: On Places of Silence and Benediction
Silence is to be always observed in the church, in the refectory, in the dormitory, and during the time of silence in the
cloister. When necessity requires, we may use
a few words or signs in these places. In the house of necessity which is called the privy we should
never use words or signs.
Benedicite
is said twice a day in the cloister, but it is
not said on Good Friday. During Lent, when there are nine lessons, it is said once, except that on
Sundays during Lent,
Benedicite
is said after chapter, and after Sext. Silence is always observed after Vespers
and before chapter.
DE SILENCIO LOCIS ET BENEDICITE : lectio 43.
In ecclesia, in refectorio et dormitorio semper est silentium tenendum et in claustro hora silentii.
Necessitate cogente breuibus uerbis uel signis in istis locis possumus uti. In domo necessaria quae
priuata uocatur, nunquam uerbis uel signis uti debemus. Bis in die Benedicite dicitur in claustro,
tamen in sexta feria Passionis Benedicite non dicitur. In Quadragesima, quando fiunt nouem lectiones,
semel dicitur, praeterquam in die dominica in Quadragesima post capitulum et post sextam horam
Benedicite dicitur. Post uesperas et ante capitulum semper silentium obseruatur.
