Glossary / Notes

Lectio 44: On those who are living in dependent parishes

Brothers who are living in dependent houses shall not deviate from the communal regulations in all places, in dress, bedding, and tonsure, and they shall sing Compline with others at the right time in summer and winter, and [they shall sing] after dinner.

They shall not run about the towns. They shall not go beyond the boundaries fixed for them by the abbot without reasonable and obvious cause and without permission from the prior (of the local house, presumably), who shall not grant it without clear reason. They shall not enter indecent or suspect places. If one of them makes some transgression, and [if] after being admonished once, twice and for a third time the prior has not disciplined him, he shall be brought to the attention of the abbot and shall be corrected by him; if the prior does not do this and the abbot learns about it by way of investigation, the abbot shall immediately give equal punishment both for the person making the transgression and for the one acquiescing with it. And if they have sworn in an inordinate manner or have had a dispute with an outsider, unless they wish to correct themselves at the suggestion of another brother, they shall be denounced to the abbot.
