porter's lodge

Period: gothic

The porter's lodge formed the easternmost part of the conversi building. There, the porter controlled access to the inner or southern court. The lodge is marked by a bell in Barbaran engraving. Lectio 39 of the customary tells us: One of the conversi or an honest person ought to be made porter of the cloister, who shall continually guard against assault, so that no outsider may enter the cloister, nor look within.
