pitanciarius

The pittancer supervised the allocation of pittances to the community, and kept record of such donations. The term, pittance is derived from the latin pietas, meaning “loving kindness.” A pittance was a donation for an extra allowance of food or wine on the occasion of the donor’s death or a similar feast. The word came to indicate any charitable donation. The pittancer’s duties are detailed in lectio 40.
