There is another precept about hospitality which says that guests should be freely received and that they should be sollicitously provided for in keeping with their personal condition and the needs of their age. In honest hospitality great honor is gained through food, as it is possible to see in the many scriptures about Lot, Abraham, Martha, Mary, Lazarus, Laches, and many others. On this matter the apostle spoke to his disciple, saying that it behoves one to be hospitable, etc. This church is reputed to have the most powerful ecclesiastic men in the church and was famous for its hospitality among the other churches of this diocese. I hope that it is allowed to have been opulent, as it was praiseworthy and prosperous. Because of this anyone may follow either the statute or their personal conditions.
